Since July 2002!

The Paralounge Drum Gathering started in July of 2002. With one very big bon-fire and one hundred and ten drum circle enthusiest from all over the region, we came together and created a drum circle space that would bring the community together.

With the best intentions for the community, Paralounge began to collect percussion ensembles from all over the region. Instructors were brought in and workshops were offered. More of the community started to take notice to the Paralounge and what is was offering the community.

Twice a year we organize educational workshops that provide technical and cultural experiences. The Paralounge believes a community that learns together, thrives together.

Each new rhythm introduced at these gatherings is brought back to the community drum circles and shared with that region. The performances entertain and educate. Most of the ensembles are playing traditional music indigenous to that culture. So the rhythms are from around the world, and so are many of the performers. This enhances the drum circle community by passing on cultural understanding and tradition.

An environment created for a purpose.

The entire community is together to celebrate drumming and dancing and singing. So when you have over 400 people camping in a village together for the purpose of creating musical energy, you can feel it, and hear it. Musicians from all over the world are exchanging techniques and creating rhythms that explore new dimension. Everywhere you look, drumming and dancing and singing.

Building a place for the community.

The Paralounge has been around long enough now, people are really getting to know each other. Everyone seems to leave the event in anticipation for the next one. The Paralounge really works hard to bring you the best drum circle experience you can have.

Many community drum circles do not have the privilege of playing all night. City noise ordinances shut the circles down around ten o'clock. Not at the Paralounge! We are located inside a campground that runs next to the Suwannee River. Our drum circles last from dusk to dawn. We have started drumming at nine o'clock Saturday night, and was still drumming Sunday at one o'clock in the afternoon!

Many community drum circles can not enjoy the presence of a firepit. At the Paralounge, we tend to get really big with our bon-fires. We keep an abundance of fire wood available so the fire will last all night.

This drum circle is made up of participants that traveled specifically to play with you! Everyone wants to drum with other communities and experience the joy of making music with others. This is not a festival drum circle! Everyone here is aware of the creative moments. We are here to enjoy our musical spirits.

The Drum Circle acts as a communication tool within the music. It teaches valuable skills, such as, when to lead or follow and how to take your place with respect to others. It gives incentive to learn and better your talents and provides self discipline exercises.

The Paralounge drum circle is not just about playing drums. It is about understanding primitive instruments and the cultures that created them. These instruments require no power outside that of your own intent to create music. They were created to mimic the sounds of nature. Some of the instruments were used for communication between tribes over long distances. They were used to celebrate harvest or prepare for war. They were used by the ancient shaman to heal the sick and cast away spirits. By understanding these instruments we begin to understand our heritage, and develop a better concept of our ancestors.

Many instruments are used to achieve musical unity. Many different instruments are used to keep rhythm. Of course, there are drums from around the world; there are wooden percussion instruments, flutes, whistles, Australian didgeridoos, rattles, shakers, and all kinds of other primitive percussion instruments. In the rhythm of the drum circle, spontaneous changes are natural and unique to the moment, affected only by the emotions of the groups and the unity achieved.

Dance is also an important part of the drum circle structure. Dancing fuses the rhythm with a physical mark of the beat. The dancers and drummers are communicating through unity of sound and physical expression. The dancers move the energy around and the drummers facilitate that movement.

The drum circle could also, in theory, be acting as a neurological cleanser. Entrainment occurs during drum circle activity. In a psychoacoustic context, entrainment is the changing the rate of brainwaves, breaths, and heartbeats from one speed to another through exposure to external periodic rhythms. While participating in rhythmic exercises, you expose yourself to mind and body altering effects.

Research performed by Dr. Tomatis has led him to understand the extra-ordinary importance of the ears functions. The ears function as communication tools and apply our physical balance. Dr. Tomatis believes the ears primary function is to govern the growth of the physical organism. Sound is to the nervous system, as food is to the body. Sound feeds the electrical impulses that charge the neo-cortex.

Could the drum circle be stimulating your nervous system? In theory, yes it could.

Through entrainment we find external pulses are manifesting a resonant frequency internally that will match the external pulse. Understanding this relationship enables us realize the significance of rhythm. Rhythms can create a healing process within your nervous system and brain waves, or create havoc. Stimulation through rhythm has many effective applications. Children have shown improvement with learning capabilities and attention problems. Rhythm exercises improve short term memory recall. Through rhythm you can control blood pressure and heart rate.

Everyone can participate!

What is rhythm?

Rhythm is life in motion. As a child is soothed by the movement of its cradle or amused by the shaking of a rattle, adults find enjoyment in sports and games. Whether it is boxing or tennis or wrestling, you will find it all based on rhythm. Intellectual recreation such as music and poetry are also governed by rhythm. Dancing is the illustration of the nature of beauty and its expression through rhythm.

For those of you, who consider yourself to have no rhythm, remember this information. Without rhythm there is no life. Live well and enjoy the rhythm!

Playing an instrument in the drum circle is not about how much rhythm you think you possess. It is about having the confidence necessary to express it.
